Art 341 Radio station

For my project I'm doing 98.7fm which was formerly star 98.7.
I'm trying to create a more edger look for the whole look of the name of the station.
The station is going toward a more modern rock.
A competitor would be KROQ 106.7, which also does rock, with a similar arrangement of genres.

In your type study, I can see that you are going for a light type. There's also bold type, but it is too hard to read with all the distortion and scratch effects. I would like to see a those bold types without all the distress.

I like the distressed look of your type. I think that it captures the characteristic of 98.7fm...

I like the guitar pick logo, but it might look to simple for a rock station.

I think the one on the second image, third one down from the left works the most. I like the idea of the sound waves but it's not working with the type you currently have. Its also very hard to distinguish what the type on the top says. The seven looks like a greater-than sign. It also looks like an arrow so I read 98 FM. If the icon is complex, the type should be simple to create balance. Also, I believe the radio station is still called Star so you may want to reconsider changing the name since people know the station by the name.

I like the type that is distressed, but some of them are harder to read. Then if you use that kind of type, you'll probably go with a design that is a little simpler - like the one with the drumsticks OR maybe you could use the drumsticks at the dot in between 98 and 7. These are just ideas :)

If you're going for edgy, I would go with the hand drawn scratchy type for the numbers. Something you could also try in this vein is to take a an existing typeface like Helvetica, and distort it yourself, break it apart etc.

As for the type treatments I do like the first sample, it's very punk/sex pistols like but 98.7 isn't just a punk station. I also like the slightly distorted typewriter looking type at the second from the bottom. It has a nice vibe to it.

Many of the typefaces are very grungy and convey way more of a heavy/metal rock attitude. 98.7 plays lighter modern rock, so I think that the logo and typemark should reflect that. Try implementing a cleaner typeface with rock instruments. Try to recreate their star logo out of an arrangement of guitar picks and place the "98.7" in the middle negative space.

I like the grungy distressed look but I think that at the same time the typeface should have a balance with the graphic element.

Overall, I like the one that says rock-a-holic best. =)

i like the first logo in the right column. the FM as the trademark sign is awesome! i think its simple yet an eye catching typeface will create the logo to stand out!
